Epic

Some of the characteristics of modern epic:

Cosmic feeling
Slow pace
Treatment of weighty philosophical issues
Density of text, sound or image
Complex narratives
Proliferation of characters
Sense of spectacle
Endless form

We can appreciate some of these characteristics in the following video, which is a little
part of “Parsifal”, Hans-Jurgen Syberberg film from 1983. When I first read about this
film I thought it might be horrible to watch a film that lasts 4 hours, but then I saw this
video and it is not bad at all, I really liked it, but I still think it is way too long.

Animated Animals

Animated cartoons existed from early in the silent film era, but really took off with a double event: the coming of sound and the creation of Mickey Mouse.
Mickey Mouse is probably the most known animated animal in the world. It made, and still makes a huge impact in the world. I believe Mickey Mouse will live forever. Everywhere we go we can recognize the silhouette of Mickey’s head and everyone’s dream is to go to Disneyland, “The happiest place on earth”.
I don’t think Walt Disney ever imagined the influence that he would have in the world by creating a mouse that acted like a human.

And well, as everything, people took the basis of what was barely done and improved it to a whole new level, as we can see with Ted, which is a teddy bear that acts like a human, but really, as a human. He drinks, goes to parties, eats, watches tv, goes to the bathroom, and he even has sex, which is a little over the edge for me. In my opinion “Ted” the movie is a really bad movie, but it still makes you laugh.

Fantasy mixes with reality

Magic realism

As we saw in class, magic realism has been defined as a “a genre where magic elements are a natural part in an otherwise mundane, realistic environment”.
One way to distinguish between fantasy and Magic Realism might be, that Magic Realist works at least seem to be taking place in this world, while many fantasy works take place in a “sub-created” world.

The class that we watched the episode of "The Twilight Zone" was probably my favorite class, I had a lovely time watching it, it really made me laugh, that's why I decided to post it.
I only found it in spanish though, so here it is:
