The groups and movements considered as forwards had as goal to shock the middle classes.

Futurism

In 1909, the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti issued a Futurist Manifesto that declared the next points and some others:

·      We want to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and rashness.

·      The essential elements of our poetry will be courage, audacity and revolt.

·      We declare that the splendor of the world has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed.

·      Beauty exists only in struggle. There is no masterpiece that has not an aggressive character.

With this declaration, I think we can already say that the futurists were very extreme and wanted to do things different to stand out.
